Sarasota rentals with a pool: how to pick yours

Short answer: if you want a private, heated, saltwater pool with a hot tub beside it and a dog in the back seat, book Heated Pool & Hot Tub | 4BR Sarasota Home. If there are ten of you, Arlington Ocean Oasis is the only home here that takes the whole party without anyone sleeping on a sofa. And if you're two people who mostly want to be on Siesta Key and would rather spend the money on dinner, the Flamingo Condo in Gulf Gate puts you under a mile from the sand with a community pool out the door.

The rest of this is about the differences that actually change a trip, because "has a pool" covers a lot of very different afternoons in Sarasota.

Private pool or community pool: decide this first

It's the single question that sorts the whole list, and it has less to do with luxury than with what time your kids swim.

A private pool is yours at seven in the morning and at ten at night. Nobody is doing laps, no association posts hours on a gate, and if someone wants to eat lunch in the water, fine. That's the case at Seashells & Sunshine, at the Iola Drive house, at Haven Hideaway, and at the Chapel Street cottage, Heated Salt Water Pool & Fire Pit Retreat, where the pool comes with an outdoor bar and a fire pit for after.

A community pool is a different proposition and not a worse one. At the Esplanade Resort Condo in Palmer Ranch, the pool is maintained by someone else, there's a gym on site, and you get a garage and a reserved space, which is more parking than most Sarasota condos hand you. At Resort Full Living, the heated community pool comes with lounge chairs, umbrellas and a spa tub, plus a fitness center, tennis, bocce, pickleball and a life-size outdoor chess set. Two bedrooms, sleeps four, so it's a couple or a small family: the trade is that you're buying into a whole club rather than a backyard.

The pool-and-dog house

Two of our Sarasota pool homes take dogs, and they're not interchangeable.

Sarasota Springs Pool Retreat is four bedrooms with a private heated pool in a quiet neighborhood minutes from Siesta Key, Lido Key and downtown. One well-behaved dog, approved in advance. And Your Crew's Perfect Gulf Coast Base on Alice Road is built for a group that wants to stay together: two living spaces, three queen bedrooms each with its own TV, a family room pull-out, a yard with games and a beach kit already packed.

Families with young kids, and the rainy hour

Florida afternoons do this: brilliant sun, then a squall off the Gulf, then sun again. The homes that survive that hour well are the ones with something to do indoors.

Seashells & Sunshine is built for it. Three bedrooms, sleeps eight, a game room with ping pong, video games and karaoke, plus bikes, chairs, umbrellas, toys and coolers in the closet. There's a crib, a high chair and a baby monitor, which saves a family with a toddler an airline bag and a rental fee. The pool is heated as a courtesy from November through April, kept in the low eighties, no extra charge. Sitting between Sarasota and Bradenton, it's about twenty minutes to the Anna Maria Island beaches, fifteen to downtown and to the Ringling, and twenty-five down to Siesta Key.

Haven Hideaway, also three bedrooms and sleeping eight, goes the other way: a heated saltwater pool ringed with tropical planting and water fountains, central to restaurants, golf and beaches. Sarasota Sunhaven gives you a renovated kitchen and both a living room and a family room, so the adults aren't trapped in the same room as the cartoons.

Groups of eight, ten, and the ones in between

Capacity is where the Sarasota pool homes separate, so here's the honest shape of it.

  • Ten: Arlington Ocean Oasis, five bedrooms and five bathrooms with a heated saltwater pool, two primary suites and living space on two floors. The bathroom count is the real story. Ten people sharing two baths before a dinner reservation is a different trip from ten people with five.

  • Six or seven: The Pool. The Views. The House. in Palm Aire is three bedrooms, two and a half baths, with a heated pool looking over the golf course and two king bedrooms that open straight onto the water. Two couples who want their own bathrooms should look at Aloha Cottage at Sapphire Shores, where both primary suites have one, though the outdoor room there is a screened patio with a propane grill rather than a pool.

Where the pool sits on the map

Sarasota is forgiving. Siesta Key, downtown and St. Armands Circle are all roughly ten to twenty-five minutes from each other by car, so a pool house in a mainland neighborhood isn't a compromise on access, it's a compromise on walking. The island homes put you near the sand. The mainland homes put you near a backyard.

Siesta Beach is the draw, and the quartz sand genuinely stays cool underfoot in August, which is the detail that converts people. Siesta Key Village, up by the north bridge, is where the bars and boutiques are. Over on Lido, St. Armands Circle holds something like 130 shops and restaurants laid out in a ring, with the Ring of Fame circus memorial in the inner circle and Columbia, the oldest restaurant in town, on the Circle itself. Lido Key Beach is five minutes further out. Downtown has the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, the Ringling sits on the bay north of the center, and Mote Marine is out on City Island.

Two homes here earn their spot on location rather than on a pool. The Ringling House sits on Ringling Boulevard, less than a mile from downtown, with the Legacy Trail two-tenths of a mile away and Lido Key four and a half miles on. No pool. If walking to dinner matters more than swimming at home, say so out loud before you book. Modern Hacienda, three bedrooms with a yard, beach gear and a dog welcome, is the same kind of trade.

What heated actually means here

From November through April the water is the difference between a pool you look at and a pool you use, and the arrangements differ house to house. At Seashells & Sunshine, heat runs as a courtesy through those winter months, held around 82 to 85 degrees, and the system is monitored by their pool company, so leave the valves alone. At the Iola Drive house, heating is requested ahead of your stay for a fee, while the hot tub is simply included. Ask us when you book and we'll tell you exactly where your dates fall.
